Me fijé que a punta de canciones e instrumentos musicales sudamericanos me arrimaba siempre a los espacios estrictamente políticos-culturales escoceses. Espacios estrictamente culturales fueron:
• hacer giras en escuelas primarías y secundarias enseñando a los niños aspectos latinoamericanos que se relacionaran con sus vidas.
• Enseñar cultura latinoamericana organizando cursos vespertinos en universidades escocesas. Los tópicos que me ocupaba iban desde las culturas pre-colombinas hasta la exploración del teatro y el cine latino americano pasando por sus músicas y la política. Cada lección iba acompañada con mis cantos sudamericanos. Esta experiencia como tutor me ayudó para después ser un estudiante universitario y graduarme en la universidad de Edimburgo.
• Trabajar invitado para festivales culturales infantiles. Como participante a uno de estos eventos fui en una ocasión invitado a tomar parte a una recepción con el Príncipe Philip en el municipio de Edimburgo. Por todo lo escrito arriba ver: Scottish Schools and Universities
• Hacer talleres didácticos sobre cultura latinoamericana.
• Hacer una rara, pero muy rara, entrevista, en Italia, con el maestro Fernando Botero, el extraordinario artista Colombiano. Ver Fernando Botero. De esta experiencia aprendí lo gentil que fue el maestro conmigo y que hay que poner mucha atención cuando uno quiere hacer una entrevista importante.
The 7:84 Theatre Compay
• Una de las experiencias mas bellas e interesantes que he tenido fue haber conocido y trabajado con John McGrath y Elizabeth MacLennan fundadores del 7:84 unos de los grupos teatrales más importantes de Gran Bretaña. Me invitaron en 1984 a que trabajase con ellos y yo acepté con algunos miedos a su propuesta de participar como músico y cantautor en: “The baby and the Bathwater”. Con esta obra de John promovimos el libro “Yo Rigoberta Menchú”. Rigoberta es una incansable trabajadora por los derechos de su pueblo en Guatemala: premio Nobel de la paz 1992. Participé como músico en “The Albannach” otra obra escrita por John McGrath, dramaturgo muy amado en el mundo del teatro británico y basada en la novela del mismo nombre escrita por Fionn Mac Colla.
John nos dejó para siempre algunos años atrás y aquí le recuerdo con mucho cariño. Con esta compañía teatral viajé dos veces a Canadá (Toronto y Nova Scotia) y nos presentamos por muchos lugares de Inglaterra y Escocia. En tiempos de Margaret Thatcher, amiga de Pinochet, trabajábamos mucho, reuniendo dinero, para ayudar económicamente a los mineros escoceses quienes por miles perdían sus trabajos por la política económica de la Thatcher de cerrar las minas de carbón.
Liz, por otra parte, escribió The Moon Belongs to Everyone” un libro de memorias y en el generosamente me incluye. Juntos con John y Liz hicimos cosas benéficas por Nicaragua y con ellos, en una sala de un famoso teatro Londinense me encontré, a boca de jarro, con lo más granado de la cultura Inglesa. John McGrath me hizo participar en una película basada sobre su obra “Red Blood Roses” con el actor escocés Gregor Fisher (ver foto) quién a su vez hizo famoso su personaje Rab C. Nesbitt en televisión. Yo y mi cumpa Galo aparecimos en uno de estos capítulos de Rab y para algunos fue quizás uno de los más chistosos de la serie. La chispa de Rab (puede ser un roto chileno por la pinta) es incomparable. Vea al final de la página el link: Rab C Nesbitt. El episodio tiene que ver con Glasgow elegida en 1995 como la ciudad europea de la cultura.
Jan Fairley
Jan fue una queridicima amiga inglesa, una conocidísima musicóloga en Gran Bretaña. Amaba Chile y Cuba. Conocia muy bien la historia de la Nueva Canción Chilena y los protagonistas de este movimiento musical de los 70. La retuve por siempre: una “fan” entusiasta de nuestra música en Gran Bretaña y una promotora de ella. Conoció e entrevistó a los grandes músicos y cantautores de habla hispana. Escribió mucho en revistas especializadas sobre las diferentes músicas del mundo.
En su casa compartimos un par de veces con los Inti para cantar juntos sentidos boleros ante la alegría de un gran músico australiano: el guitarrista clásico John William. Visite el sitio de Jan en la web.
Espacios políticos/culturales
fueron con: Hamish Henderson conocidísimo intelectual escocés (el primero en traducir del italiano al inglés las cartas de Antonio Gramsci escritas en prisión). Hamish además de ser autor de famosísimas canciones escocesas fue un gran investigador de las tradiciones de Escocia. Siempre participó en actos culturales y políticos que tenían que ver con Chile. Me escribió dos cartas muy hermosas en relación a mi primer album: Debo Cantar Bonito. Ver Hamish Henderson
Inti Illimani
fue un extraordinario grupo con mucha fama en Chile en Italia y otros países. Vivieron por muchos años exiliados en Italia. Pioneros junto a otros artistas de la llamada Nueva Canción Chilena de los años 70. Me sentí siempre muy honrado, junto a otros chilenos, en ayudar a organizar sus conciertos en Edimburgo. Les conocí bien. Gente muy seria, pero simpática, que dio mucho por nuestra cultura en el exterior. Cuando nos visitaban en Edimburgo, siempre fue una gran fiesta para los chilenos exiliados. Una vez tuve la oportunidad de encontrarme en una recepción con el gran Dario Fo (premio Nobel de literatura en 1997) y aceptó encantado de tomarse una fotografía conmigo cuando le dije en italiano “sono cileno”. Fo se emocionó ya que vislumbró la imagen de Salvador Allende y de los IntiIllimani. Ver Inti illimani

Trabajos en las escuelas y universidades escocesas
Scottish Schools and universities
Back in the 1990s, as a way of doing some work to earn some money, I had the idea of presenting in educational establishments: primary, secondary schools and universities some didactic workshops based on Latin American culture including geography, topography, the flora and the fauna. Everything was done with my music. This type of work served me as a platform to study and prepared me to go to the Edinburgh University. I graduated here in 1997.I was also used to be invited to play at Children festivals and on this capacity once I was invited, along with many artists, to a reception with Prince Philip at the Edinburgh City Chamber. At the reception, I was one of the interpreters between the Prince and some members of La Banda de la Risa (JA!,JA!,JA!) the excellent Argentinian Theatre Group. The Prince had come to see a Gala performance of Fausto by La Banda de la Risa at Inverleith Park. I have not doubt that it was a PR exercise because the Prince's visit took place after the Malvinas/Falkland war.

For the things mentioned above and for
the reasons listed below I realized that I have always been involved in
cultural/political activities related either to Chile or Latin-America.
This task allowed me to do exciting things and be in touch with interesting
people involved in cultural work in Scotland.
A great experience was to work with the great political theatre Co. The 7:84. We toured Britain and Canada and allowed me to get to know two great people: John McGrath and his wife Liz MacLennan.

In 1984 the company needed someone to write songs and perform for a one woman show written by John and called: The baby and the Bathwater. John and Liz invited me to meet them at their flat and there they explained to me what was required of me not before telling me that they knew the Chilean actor Hugo Medina in those days living in exile in London. I accepted the challenge with happiness. I was about to enter a world where I had never been before, a very demanding theatre world which resulted for me in a unique and an invaluable experience.

Works at times had been to help to organise in Edinburgh the concerts of famous Chileans bands and singers. Among them The Inti Illimani.
The Inti illimani
The group came several times to play for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and my wife and I were always asked to help them with their concert. The band represented so much for our community of Chileans in Scotland and I got to know them well. In Fact, Horacio Duran in one of their presentation in our city, stayed in our home. I like them very much as they not only were fantastic musicians but because they were a bunch of very nice people.

A person Who always supported my work and took part in Solidarity events for Chile was Hamish Henderson.
Hamish Henderson
Hamish Henderson was once in my home for dinner conversing and singing old Italian Partisan songs to my Italian mother in law who was visiting us in edinburgh. Hamish had been during the war a British intelligence officer in Italy. My mother in law was surprised to see Hamish singing songs that she had learned during the war and was thrilled with the experience. Hamish loved Antonio Gramsci. He had been one of the first to translate his work from Italian into English. Hamish, the poet, the song collector, and composer of Freedom Come all-ye was a Socialist and a true internationalist. We shared a platform several times. In 1986 I asked him if he could help me to find a record company to record my songs and he did. Only in 1989, however, I could record my songs. I asked him if he could write a few words about my record Debo Cantar Bonito and he ended up writing 3 pages full of beautiful things.

Once in Italy I asked the Chilean novelist Luis Sepulveda if he could give me an interview and he declined. The artist who did not decline to be interviewed by me was the Colombian painter and sculptor Fernando Botero. The interview took place in 1992 in a beautiful Italian Piazza and in the beautiful region of Tuscany. Botero is one of the greatest Latin American artists working today

Maestro Fernando Botero was very kind to accept me for an interview . This was a weird meeting in which I, the interviewer, talk a lot instead of making Mr Botero to talk. (stupid me!) The setting was in a beautiful Italian Piazza around a table in a lovely coffee bar. Unfortunately, when I began to do the interview, it began to rain and not far from where we were sitting, a guy began to do some drilling work ruining in part the sound. What is important, however, is the fact that Maestro Botero was very kind to me.

Below: A remarkable friend of mine was the English musicologist and journalist Jan Fairley. She was always a great supporter of my artistic activities. Jan was a powerful voice in Britain of the popular music of our world.
"I am an experienced and passionate ethnomusicologist working as an arts and music journalist and broadcaster, writer and editor as well as researcher, lecturer, radio presenter and producer. I have a breadth of organising experience at home and abroad. I am a fluent Spanish speaker. I love travelling and have worked abroad (notably Chile 1971-3 and again in 1994) and researched in Cuba, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Finland."
